Tebello Manong, 13 years old
Tebello Manong, 13 years
Thato Manong, 10 years old
Thato Manong, 10 years
These two girls have been identified as being extremely vulnerable and in need sustained support.

Their Father died in 2004 and a year later their Mother died in 2005. Since then they have been living with a paternal uncle. The uncle has been in hospital, 40 km away, for more than a month. He has AIDS and will probably not live much longer.

The girls are fed by neighbors and villagers but they also help with laundry and childcare to "earn" their keep.

Tebello's and Thato's homeTheir At present they live on their own in a ramshackle traditional style rondavel. The home needs a new door that can be locked. At present they close it by knotting wire. Wall and roof repairs are also required. They do not have a mattress to sleep on and this week they were, very kindly, given blankets. They do not have cooking pots or any comforts at all in their home. No electricity, no heating, no water supply. They were sent home from school this week at the beginning of the 3rd therm as they had not paid 20 Rand (3 USD) for school security, had no schoolbooks, and Thato had no shoes to wear to school.

Both girls are very friendly, caring and speak English. They are both doing well at school in spite of their circumstances. Tebello came 4thout of 83 students in Grade 6 and Thato was 3rd out of 78 students in Grade 4 at half year.

These two girls will need further support, financially, materially and socially until they are independent. This support will be provided and administered by the Leratong Community Centre.

On behalf of the Leratong Community Centre, thank you for your interest and support.
